Abstract:

This research seeks to report a blogging programme that was carried out at H M Patel Institute of English Training and Research in the MA [ELT] programme for the final year students. In order to triangulate the findings, the study collected data by surveying the learners’ blogging processes, investigating learning strategies through SILL (Strategy Inventory of Language Learning) and reflective reports, and conducting retrospective interviews. The study revealed that students (a) became more aware of the technological possibilities of ELT while developing interaction within the virtual space, (b) developed metacognitive strategies (i.e. reflecting on one’s own action, self monitoring, self evaluation), (c) developed cognitive strategies (i.e. analyzing and reasoning, revising, inferencing), affective strategies, and social strategies. The experience of this programme shows us that even in low-resource situations, technology can, and does, play a significant role to enhance language learning strategies. Learners become conscious strategy users. This research thus explores the possibilities to develop LLS (language learning strategies) in a non-traditional mode of classroom interaction especially through the use of weblogs.
