Application Of Social Work Competencies And Techniques By The Non-Government Organizations In Bangladesh: A Study Based On Sylhet City Corporation
Bangladesh has witnessed a substantial growth of non-government organizations (NGOs) after the independence, especially from 1980s. These NGOs have been engaged in multifarious development activities all over the country and in the international platform. Grameen Bank is a Noble Laureate in Peace and BRAC has got recognition as one of the largest NGOs in whole globe. It is a recognized fact that government organizations (GOs) must work along with NGOs for the socioeconomic-cultural development of the country, especially developing state like Bangladesh. Concerted efforts of GOs and NGOs are on to have the development activities implemented in Bangladesh. The NGOs of Bangladesh are not interested to apply Social Work knowledge, though they advocate that they are performing Social Work. Even, when some of them are applying Social Work Competencies and Techniques, they don’t acknowledge that and they distort the knowledge according to their purposes. Yes, there are criticisms against the activities of NGOs, but the reality is that there is way to deny the contributions of NGOs in development activities in a country like ours. NGOs can only supplement and complement the government but never replace it. Donor agencies often consider NGOs as sound and cost-effective mechanism for implementing community development projects. Moreover, it may not be forgotten that NGOs cannot reach all the poor living in the country and therefore government- NGO collaboration is a must to eradicate poverty, face child and gender issues, advocate human rights and meet other socio-economic-cultural evils and problems. We should confirm that too.
