Teacher Identity in the Age of AI: Emerging Challenges for Teacher Education
Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the face of education. AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, intelligent tutoring systems, automated evaluation systems and learning analytics are already impacting the global learning and teaching landscape. These changes present new possibilities to improve the quality and accessibility of education, but also raise a number of questions about the nature and role of teachers. Traditionally, teachers are seen as purveyors of knowledge, mentors, facilitators and role models. But these are changing dramatically in the age of AI.
The advent of AI has raised questions about the traditional teacher identity and the roles of teachers in technology-mediated learning need to be rethought. Teacher education institutions are thus faced with the challenge to create future teachers who can make effective use of AI while maintaining the human aspects of teaching. This paper investigates the notion of teacher identity, the implications of AI for the role of the teacher, and the new challenges for teacher training in today's context.
